Point of View and Voice
What is point of View? Point of View is the vantage point from which a writer tells a story. There are three kinds.
What is Omniscient Point of View? Omniscient means ALL KNOWING. The narrator is outside of the story and knows all of the characters’ thoughts, past, and feelings.
What is Limited Third Person Point of View? The narrator is outside of the story, but focuses on the actions, thoughts, feelings and past of only one character.
What is First Person point of View? It is when a character in the story tells the story. The reader knows only the thoughts and feelings of the character telling the story.
What is vernacular style: It is when a writer writes exactly like the character would speak. Usually first person stories use some sort of vernacular style, which will make the story more realistic, but may also cause it to be harder to read.
What is Voice? It is the writer’s special use of language in a story that includes diction and tone.
1) Diction: The kinds of words a writer chooses. It can be formal, informal, poetic, plain, etc..
2) Tone: Is the attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject or character. It is conveyed through the writer’s choice of words. It can be humorous, sad, or friendly, etc…
What is jargon? Jargon is special vocabulary used by people engaged in a particular activity or occupation. It’s basically words that those people would understand and be familiar with, but others may not know what they mean.
Objective: The students will complete more AP Writing Practice.

What is a metaphor? a direct comparison of two unlike things: Diego is a dog. Olivia is a flower.
What is an extended metaphor: a comparison between two unlike things that continues for an extended period, such as across a paragraph or an entire work, unlike a simple metaphor that is limited to one sentence.
Objective: The students will do some AP Writing.

1. I am doing Quarter Grades today. If you have work to make up, it's due today. I will not grade anything after today.
2. Day 2 of District Writing Test. Planning essay and begin writing. If I see ANY open tabs besides the essay, you fail, you get a referral to the office for cheating, a call home, and lose all trust for the rest of the year.

3. Read Monte Cristo Chapter 29: The Catacombs of St. Sebastian.
Objective: The students will finish their character sketch.
Character List: Albert and Franz
1. Finish Character Sketch. Make sure that you have physical description, TWA of the character and TWA of other character.
2. Make sure the format is correct. MLA
3. Make sure that your paragraphs are correct and that any dialogue is properly punctuated.
Example: Then John said, "Why do we have to do this assignment?"
4. Print. Highlight and label in three colors the three methods of indirect characterization above.
5. Read MC Chapter 28 (XXIII) "The Carnival at Rome."
Objective: The students will create a character using all methods of indirect characterization.
Note: I did not post the chapters you were supposed to read yesterday, so there is no quiz today. Make sure that you read Chapters 26-27 today. Office hours is a great time for you to get your reading done!
