Objective:  The students will complete their voice creative writing.

2.  Complete Voice Writing:  Print when done.  Turn in tomorrow.

3.  Read Monte Cristo Chapter 42  (XLII):  "The Dinner"  

Day 49

Objective:  The students will practice writing in different voices.

1.  WP:  The Secret Lion

2.  Turn in MC Study Guide and The Secret Lion for grade.

3.  Open up "Voice" assignment in GC.  Discuss and begin writing.

4.  Read MV Chapter 41:  The Telegraph 

Day 48

Objective:  The students will complete analysis of story.

1.  MC Quiz 38-39

2.  Finish "The Secret Lion" assignment.  Keep until Monday.

3.  Read MC 40 and complete Study Guide.  Also due Monday. For Chapter 40.  Nortier calls for a "notary."  That is a person who witnesses people signing important documents like wills, home loans and such.

Day 47

Objective:  The students will complete close reading of The Secret Lion and then analyze.

1.  Discuss MC Chapter 37

2.  Finish Reading

3.  Work on analysis handout

4.  HW Read MC Chapters 38-39 (11 pages).  For sure a quiz tomorrow.  Easy chapters. 

Day 46

Objective:  The students will begin reading a story with a very unique voice.

1.  Turn in AP Writing Paragraphs for grade.

2.  Discuss MC Chapters 35-36.  Add Valentine to Character List.

3.  Unit 3 Notes:  POV and Voice

4.  Begin Close Reading:  "The Secret Lion"

5.  HW:  Read Monte Cristo Chapter 37 

 

Unit 3 Notes

Point of View and Voice

 

What is point of View?   Point of View is the vantage point from which a writer tells a story.  There  are three kinds.

 

What is Omniscient Point of View?  Omniscient means ALL KNOWING.  The narrator is outside of the story and knows all of the characters’ thoughts, past, and feelings.

 

What is Limited Third Person Point of View?  The narrator is outside of the story, but focuses on the actions, thoughts, feelings and past of only one character.

 

What is First Person point of View?  It is when a character in the story tells the story.  The reader knows only the thoughts and feelings of the character telling the story.

 

 

What is vernacular style:  It is when a writer writes exactly like the character would speak.  Usually first person stories use some sort of vernacular style, which will make the story more realistic, but may also cause it to be harder to read.

 

 

What is Voice?  It is the writer’s special use of language in a story that includes diction and tone.

       1)  Diction:  The kinds of words a writer chooses.  It can be formal, informal, poetic, plain, etc..

       2)  Tone:  Is the attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject or character.  It is conveyed through the writer’s choice of words.  It can be humorous, sad, or friendly, etc…

 

 What is jargon?  Jargon is special vocabulary used by people engaged in a particular activity or occupation.  It’s basically words that those people would understand and be familiar with, but others may not know what they mean.

 

Day 45

Objective:  The students will complete more AP Writing Practice.

1.  MC Quiz 33-34 (it was 10 pages.  You should all have read).  25 points.

2.  Add characters to list and discuss. 

3.  Get a blank sheet of paper:  Metaphor Notes.

4.  AP Writing:  Monte Cristo's Fortune Metaphor

5.  HW:  Read Chapters 35-36 

What is a metaphor?  a direct comparison of two unlike things:  Diego is a dog.  Olivia is a flower. 

What is an extended metaphor:  a comparison between two unlike things that continues for an extended period, such as across a paragraph or an entire work, unlike a simple metaphor that is limited to one sentence.

 

 

Day 44

Objective:  The students will do some AP Writing.

1.  MC Chapters 31-32 Quiz

Day 43

Objective:  The students will finish their district writing test.

1.  Start now.  When finished, go print them in the library.  Submit them in GC.

2.  Monte Cristo:  Make sure that you read Chapters 31-32 by Monday if you didn't yesterday. 

Day 42

Objective: Students will continue their district writing assessments.

1.   I am doing Quarter Grades today.  If you have work to make up, it's due today.  I will not grade anything after today.

2.  Day 2 of District Writing Test.  Planning essay and begin writing.  If I see ANY open tabs besides the essay, you fail, you get a referral to the office for cheating, a call home, and lose all trust for the rest of the year.

3.  Homework:  Read Monte CRisto Chapters 31-32"  The Count of Monte Cristo meets Fernand Mondego and his wife (Mercedes) and then goes to visit Danglars at his bank. 

Day 41

 Objective: Students will begin their district writing assessments.

1. Turn in Monte Cristo Study Guide Questions

2. Put all electronics away!

3. Take out pen and highlighter

Objective:  The students will see a perfect set of songs for the Monte Cristo Soundtrack Project.

Day 39

Objective:  The students will start the next unit on Point of View and Voice.

1.  Turn in your Character Sketch if you didn't on Friday.  Make sure you highlight the three types of characterization.

Day 38

Objective:  The students will finish their character sketch.

Character List:  Albert and Franz 

1.  Finish Character Sketch.  Make sure that you have physical description, TWA of the character and TWA of other character. 

2.  Make sure the format is correct.  MLA

3.  Make sure that your paragraphs are correct and that any dialogue is properly punctuated.

Example:  Then John said, "Why do we have to do this assignment?"

4.  Print.  Highlight and label in three colors the three methods of indirect characterization above.

5.  Read MC Chapter 28 (XXIII) "The Carnival at Rome."

Day 37

Objective:  The students will create a character using all methods of indirect characterization.

Note:  I did not post the chapters you were supposed to read yesterday, so there is no quiz today.  Make sure that you read Chapters 26-27 today.  Office hours is a great time for you to get your reading done!

1.  Finish yesterday's paragraph.  Highlight in the three colors:  Topic Sentence (color 1), Fact and Quote (color 2) and analysis (color 3).

2.  Creative Writing:  Character Sketch:  Direct to Indirect.  Typed.  MLA format. 

3.  Read MC Chapters 26-27 

Day 36

Objective:  The students will write an AP Style great paragraph analyzing a character.

1.  Get yesterday's assignment from folder:  "Two Kinds"

2.  MC 25 Quiz

3.  Discuss and fill in new character and timeline.

4.  AP Style Writing:  Write a paragraph where you analyze one character from "Two Kinds."

5.  Read Chapters 26-27
