Virtual Learning Update for March 31

Hello sophomores,

Yesterday I spent the day looking at what the district has set for us to do during the next 6 weeks.

We are scheduled to start online "teaching" in two weeks.

But there are things that you should be doing.

1)  Outside reading.  I still need to see it done.  All of it.  Close Reading.  Oral Question (through a text) and a written report.  It is still worth 650 points.  How it will affect your grade is up in the air right now, but I still expect it to be done since it was assigned before we left.

2)  If you dressed up for Julius Caesar toga day, I need to get you the points in your grade.  So if you dressed, send me a picture of the signature sheet (or a picture of yourself dressed on that day).
I have only one person, Karina.

Be safe.  Read that book.

Spring "Break" update

Hello everyone,

Just checking in.  After this week (our scheduled break), teachers will be trained how to use the distance learning program called Oddesy Ware.  Then after that, I guess we have a week to plan how to use it.

Then I will assign some work that can be done (your choice) to improve your grade.  If you don't so it, it will NOT affect your grade.

But... How is that Outside Book?  That is one thing that you could be doing.

Hope all is well.  Stay safe.

Mr. Warren

Virus Update 4 I think

It looks like we are going digital, so here is some info if you need a device or a mobil hotspot.

Message that can be sent to families:

In order to provide the resources students need to learn from home, we are asking families who do not have internet access or an electronic device such as a computer, Chromebook or tablet at home, to let us know:

If you do not have a device for your child to access online learning resources from home, please complete the “Student Device and Internet Request” form by going to https://bit.ly/RUSDDEVICE or call us at 951-328-4098 for English and 951-328-4099 for Spanish. Please provide this information by midnight, Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

If your child already has a device and internet they can use to access online learning resources at home, you do not need to complete the Request Form.

Virus Break Update 3

Hello sophomores.  Hope you are all well.

As of today, now I have finished the last research paper that I left at school.  So all grades are 100% up to date.

If we are not going to return to school, what you see in Aeries will be your semester grade.

Hopefully we will hear more soon about doing stuff online, but right now we are not allowed to give any assignments for points.

Text me if you have any questions.  951-880-4804.  Make sure you say your name.

Virus Update 2

Hello everyone.

How is that outside book?

I just finished reading all of your Research Papers and putting the grades in aeries.

We have been told that we can not assign anything at this point legally, so right now finish that book report.

That is one thing that for sure you must send me at some point before I do final semester grades.

Send it ASAP.  We can do oral questions and I can check close reading when we return to class.

Take care!  Warren

District Essay Day 1

Objective:  The students will begin a three day process of writing a good paper.

How Poet’s Use Techniques to Address Interactions of Humans and Their Worlds

Objective:  The students will write an essay that answers the following question:  What are the most effective techniques (literary devices, narrative structure and form, syntax and diction, characterization, tone, imagery, rhetorical devices) that authors use to address the interactions of humans and their worlds.

To make this task easier on you, I have collected five poems that have the same subject:  Dreams.  Each poem has a different theme and a different method of making the poet’s point, so as you read, identify the theme of the poem, and which technique or techniques (listed above) is/are used.

Lesson:  Day 1
Reading and analyzing:  Get in groups of four.  Read each of the poems.  As your read each poem, discuss as a group what the poem is trying to say to the reader.  What statement about life is the author making?  This is the Theme.  Then, as a group, decide which techniques were used.  Do this for each poem.  Discuss each poem and which poems would be best to use in the essay.

Lesson:  Day 2
Review and choose your selections.  Figure out how you will organize your essay so that it makes sense and flows properly (which poem should be discussed first, second and third).  Come up with an overall thesis statement that you will prove in the essay.  This thesis should be stated clearly somewhere in the paper (probably best in the intro).  Begin writing.

Lesson:  Day 3
Writing.  You have the rest of this period to write.  If you have done your essay correctly, it will be five paragraphs of analysis which is supported by textual evidence from the poems (integrated quotes).
