Day 34

Objective:  The students will complete their character sketch.

Congratulations Cross Country Athletes on League Pre-lims

1.  Complete writing your sketch.  Make sure when you are done that you print it out.  Then, use three different colored highlighters to find and LABEL all three parts of indirect characterization for me.

2.  Weekend off of any homework.  Go to the game tomorrow and support the football team, the cheer squad and ASB.  They work hard!

Day 32

Objective:  The students will discuss how Dantes' escape is a symbol/metaphor for a baptism.

1.  Monte Cristo Quiz:  It's worth 20 points.  Period three, it's worth 30 points.  If five people fail, tomorrow will be worth 100 points.  I am a little PO about students not reading 10 pages.

2.  Discuss the symbol/metaphor sheet.

3.  Read Chapter 20 and complete the MC Study Guide for turn in tomorrow.

Day 30

Objective:  The students will work with last week's story and continue Monte Cristo.

CST Activity: “Two Kinds”

 

     In the “Two Kinds” a conflict arises in a chinese American family when a strong-willed mother is bent on seeing her daughter become a prodigy.  She simply wants to be herself.  As the mother pushes the child the young girl becomes de-moralized and angry after several failures.  This is an example of an External, Man Versus Man conflict.

Objective:  The students will use today to discuss anything from Monte Cristo that is hard to understand, go over MC Study Guide, and the short story.

Today is a catch up day!  For us to make sure that you understand all parts of MC and the short story.

Monte Cristo Chapters 11-15

1.  Get out Monte Cristo and the study guide.  Discuss the chapter with me.  

2.  Get out your Two Kinds vocab and turn in.

3.  Get out Two Kinds assignment and complete if needed for turn in Monday.

4.  Complete any work needed to catch up.

Take the weekend off of any work.

Day 24

Objective:  The students will begin their Monte Cristo Group Project and analyze Local Color in the short story that we read.

I want the "Graded Work" folder empty by the end of the period.

Next Week:  I will be out sick until Friday!  You will be the BEST kids ever for the sub.

1.  Put together your WP Packet (make sure you have proper MLA heading)

2.  Discuss Monte Cristo Group Project (This is a cool, fun assignment.  I would love doing this if I was 40 years younger!  :)  )

Everyday Use

     An inference is an intelligent guess based on evidence in a story and on what you already know.  When making inferences about characters’ readers base many guesses on what characters say and do.  In the short story Everyday Use readers find out what type of person Maggie is through the things that she has done and the things that she says.

 

Chapter 2 Notes:  Character and Characterization

 

 

What is a character?  A character is a person or thing with action in a story.

 

What is a protagonist?  A protagonist is the main character in the plot

 

What is an antagonist?  The antagonist is the character that causes the conflict.

 

What is a round character?  A round character is a fully developed character that has the qualities of real people.  They have many different personality traits.

 

What is a flat character?  A flat character is not fully developed.  They are two-dimensional characters with only one or two personality traits.

 

What is a stock character?  A flat character that is a stereotype.  A character that fits our preconceived ideas about their “type.”  Like a dumb blonde or a mad scientist.

 

What is a dynamic character?  A dynamic character is one that changes in an important way at some point in the story.  By the end of the story a dynamic character has gained some new understanding, made an important decision or taken a crucial action.

 

What is a static character?  A character that does not change.  These are usually subordinate characters.
