Day 152

Objective: This is a day for Tribe 7 to prepare for Monday because they will have the period to teach their chapter.  Again you will need a Quiz, a WP, a Dialectic Slide Show Discussion, and something Extra.  AND each member has to look "professional and act professionally."

1.  Group 7:  Get with your group and assign tasks.

2.  Read Chapter 7.  Read silently and respectfully.  I am now able to walk and will make surprise visits (period 3 and period 6).  If I come in and it's noisy and crazy, I will just take points away from your group grade on the board.  Ms. Martinez will also.

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Day 151

Objective: Students will continue with LotF.

1. Ch 6 WP

2. Chapter 6 Dialectic:

Again, this is just a model of what you should do in your group activity.  EACH member will have to talk during the Dialectic Slide Show.  If one member doesn't know what he/she is talking about, the whole group loses points for the dialectic journal part of your "teaching."  So pay attention to this as it is presented to you and discussed.

Ch 6 WP:

Lord of the Flies Chapters 1-5

In these Chapters, the “littluns” scream in the night from terror of the “snake-thing.”  And Jack admits that at times when he is hunting he senses something behind him.  The dark terrors of the jungle represent the dark parts of the human mind.  It isn’t until chapter 6 that their fear of a beast actually comes true.

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

Day 150

Objective: Students will continue with LotF

1. Ch 5 quiz

2. Ch 5 Dialectic Journal Discussion.

Pay attention to what I did.  This is what YOU will have to do in your group teaching of your chapter.  I want you to pay attention to the way that the boys communicate.  One of the key elements of being civilized is our ability to speak and communicate.  Watch how the boys "devolve" in their communication skills.

3. Read Ch 6.

This is the last chapter that I will teach.  After this, the groups will teach:  They will have a five question Quiz, a 5 sentence WP, a Dialectic Journal Slide Show and Discussion, and something creative and extra.

Tuesday, April 18, 2023

Day 149

Objective: Continue with LotF

1.  Turn in Chapter 4 Characterization Sheet for Jack now.  No late papers.

2.  LOTF Chapter 4 Quiz

3.  Chapter 4 Dialectic Discussion

4.  Read Chapter 5

Monday, April 17, 2023

Day 148

Objective: students will continue with LotF

1. WP 15

2. Talk about project

3. Read Chapter 4:  You do not have to do a dialectic journal, but tomorrow I will show you one that I did as a model of what you will do in your group when you "teach" your chapter to the class.

4. Characterization Sheet for Jack. Read the chapter and focus on Jack's development, find THREE quotes for each column that show how the author characterizes him.

WP 15:

Lord Of The Flies explores the nature of all human beings.  The author purposely put a group of young boys, on an island, without any adult supervision or influence.  The main characters are young because they represent the Innocence and Purity of childhood.  As the boys devolve (opposite of evolve), it became apparent that they are inherently evil.

Friday, April 14, 2023

Day 147

Objective: Students will continue with LotF activities.

1. 10 minutes for Ch 3 quiz

2. WP 14

3. Dialectic Journal Ch 3 Discussion

HW: no LotF reading, but how is that outside book? You have one month.

WP 14, Ch 3

Chapter three of Lord Of The Flies follows the development of three of the main characters; Jack, Ralph and Simon.  Jack became obsessed with hunting Ralph & Simon work together to make huts for shelter.  While the other boys just play and mess around.  At the end of the chapter, Simon feeds the little boys and delivers fruit to their "outstretched hands".

Thursday, April 13, 2023

Day 146

Objective: Students will continue with LotF activities.

1. WP #13 LotF Ch 2

2. Read Ch 3 and do Dialectic Journal Ch 3:

This one you will do on your own.  I modeled two for you, now you know what to do.  Take a sheet of paper, and fold it down the middle "hotdog" style.  On the left column, title it "Important Quote or Action" and the right side "Response/Analysis."

Read Chapter 3 and find a MINIMUM of 10 important things to write on the left side and 10 analysis responses.  You of course can find more than 10.

Due tomorrow.

WP:
In Lord of the Flies, the author tries to mix in many different biblical allusions.  In the first chapter, the island is described as a paradise, which is an allusion to the garden of eden.  In the second chapter, he introduced the second biblical allusion; the snakelike beast.  So just like the bible, the first mention of something evil is a snake or serpent.  You should now realize that things are going to start going wrong.

Wednesday, April 12, 2023

Day 145

Objective: Students will discuss Ch 2 and the project.

1. Dialectic Journal Chapter 2

2. Discuss project and group names

No HW if caught up on reading and work.

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

Day 144

Objective: Students will discuss Chapter 2 of LOTF

1. WP #12

2. Chapter 2 quiz

3. Chapter 2 dialectic journal

The book starts off with two boys walking, talking and in search of food.  The boys, Ralph and Piggy don’t know one another.  When the heavy boy tells his nickname, Ralph thinks that it is funny and teased the boy.  The author did this on purpose to show that even the protagonist of this novel is not perfect.

Day 143

Warren Update:  I am home now from the second surgery.  I have a 24 hour IV hooked up, and the infection seems to be going away.  I CAN NOT come back until after my next appointment, April 28.  The best thing that you can do for me is keep working and learning.  Help Ms. Martinez and just be great kids.  Hate missing so much.  Warren

1. Discussion:  Lord of the Flies is a VERY symbolic book.  Almost everything in it represents something deeper.  You need to read like an AP Student:  Very Deeply.  For example:  In Chapter 1, when the boys go explore the island and the author spends about three pages describing the beauty of the island and its perfection:  It is a Biblical allusion to the first book of the Bible:  A paradise in the first Bible book= A paradise in the first chapter of LOTF= The Garden of Eden.  So in the first chapter, the island is PERFECT!!  PERFECT and PURE!

2.  Handout:  Dialectic Journal Chapter 1:  I read the chapter and found all of the important Quote, Action or Word and wrote it on the left.  It's your job now to figure out why I thought it's important to the rest of the novel.  You have 25 minutes and this is worth 25 points in the computer.  You must work (NO PHONES!!).

3.  Chapter 1 Dialectic Discussion

4.  Homework:  Read Chapter 2

Friday, April 07, 2023
