Objective:  The students will read a short story and analyze its voice and POV.

Monte Cristo Chapter 23 discuss.

1.  Chapter 3 Notes on POV and Voice.

2.  Close read The Secret Lion

3.  Monte Cristo Chapters 24-25.  That's 15 pages so don't wait til the last minute.  Read it when you have time in other classes and at lunch.

Objective:  The students will work on some Monte Cristo.

1.  MC Quiz Chapters 21-22

2.  Pass back all work in the graded folder.  I want it empty!

3.  Read MC 23 and complete study guide questions for the chapters read.

Day 33

Objective:  The students will know important vocabulary for next week's stories.

Easy, nice vocabulary day! :)

1.  "The Secret Lion" Vocab. Due tomorrow.

2.  Read Monte Cristo Chapters 21-22.  A mysterious white guy (dressed as an Abbe) visits Caderousse at his Inn.  Great chapters!!

3.  Study Guide Questions.  Quiz tomorrow.

Day 32

Objective:  The students will complete their character sketch.

Turn in MC Study Guide 11-20.

1.  Finish writing your character sketch.  Make sure that you have each type of indirect characterization in it.

2.  Print it out.

3.  Use three different colored highlighters to highlight the three types and label on your paper.  Remember, if you only have two, then the best grade that you can get is a 66%.

Day 31

Objective:  The students will do a little bit of creative writing.

Discuss Chapters  18-19

1.  WP Number _____

2.  Go over Direct and Indirect Characterization

3.  Creative Writing:  Direct to Indirect.  On your computer.  Open the doc in GC and set up document in proper MLA format.  Create a character.

4.  Read Chapter 20

Objective:  The students will complete the analysis of the short story's characters.

4.  Read Monte Cristo Chapters 16-17 (The Escape!)

5.  Pass back all graded work in folder at back of class.

CST Activity: “Two Kinds”

     In the story “Two Kinds” a conflict arises in a chinese American family when a strong-willed mother is bent on seeing her daughter become a prodigy.  She simply wants to be herself.  As the mother pushes the child the young girl becomes de-moralized and angry after several failures.  This is an example of an External, Man Versus Man conflict.

     Alice Walker is an American Novelist, short story writer, poet, and social activist. In 1982, she became the 1st African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which she was awarded for her novel The Color Purple.  She is a modern-day feminist, and her specific brand of feminism includes advocacy of women of color. In 1983, Alice coined the term womanist to mean "a black feminist or feminist of color”.
