Julius Caesar Act I Scene 1
The drama opens up on the streets of Rome during the roman festival of Lupercal. This festival is celebrated on February 15. In the ceremony, young men raced around a designated coarse and whipped bystanders with strips of goatskin. Those who are whipped were assured fertility in the coming year. This strange ritual was the beginning of our modern day “holiday” that is still celebrated today.

A Drama is a story that is acted in reel time and space by live actors in front of a live audience. The word drama is based on the greek verb “dran”, which means “to do”. It could be said that a drama or play is something that involves people doing certain things; words are spoken, actions are taken, minds are changed. Julius Caesar is an example of a tragic historical drama.
