Day 25

Objective:  The students will read the first half of this week's short story.

1.  Get the blue/green lit books from the back.

2.  Characterization Notes

3.  Read 1/2 of "Everyday Use."

4.  Monte Cristo:  Add Nortier and General Quesnel to your character list.  And Chateau D'if to the Timeline.

5.  MC:  Read Chapters 11-12 and complete Study Guide Questions.  Quiz Tomorrow! It's 11 pages.

Day 24

Objective:  The students will discuss MC and know the types of characters that authors create in the literature.

2.  MC Soundtrack Project

3.  Unit 2:  Character Notes

4.  Read Chapter 10 (X) of Monte Cristo and complete study guide.  Due tomorrow.

 

Chapter 2 Notes:  Character and Characterization

 

 

What is a character?  A character is a person or thing with action in a story.

 

What is a protagonist?  A protagonist is the main character in the plot

 

What is an antagonist?  The antagonist is the character that causes the conflict.

 

What is a round character?  A round character is a fully developed character that has the qualities of real people.  They have many different personality traits.

 

What is a flat character?  A flat character is not fully developed.  They are two-dimensional characters with only one or two personality traits.

 

What is a stock character?  A flat character that is a stereotype.  A character that fits our preconceived ideas about their “type.”  Like a dumb blonde or a mad scientist.

 

What is a dynamic character?  A dynamic character is one that changes in an important way at some point in the story.  By the end of the story a dynamic character has gained some new understanding, made an important decision or taken a crucial action.

 

What is a static character?  A character that does not change.  These are usually subordinate characters.

Day 23

Objective:  The students will discuss the turning point of Monte Cristo in the exposition.

 Any more Media Permission Slips for points. 

1.  MC Quiz Chapters 1-6

2.  Discuss the chapters, study guide questions and timeline/character list.

3.  Go over vocab definitions and connotations.

4.  Finish vocab.  Turn in by the end of the period.

5.  Homework:  Read Chapters 7, 8 and 9.  You have the day off tomorrow from being here, but not from reading.  But, there is no homework for the weekend.

     The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel written by french author Alexandre Dumas.  It is 1 of his most famous works, along with The Three Musketeers.  The story starts out in Marseilles FranceThe story involves hope justice betrayal and vengeance.

Day 21

Objective:  The students will discuss the first chapters of MC and start a character page and a timeline.

Tomorrow we will retake the "Chapter 1 "Pretest" so that you can get a better grade.

WP Activity:  Chapter 1 Test

     The chapter tests that students’ take in this class are wrote by the district and they don’t always reflect the “Good Writing Rules” that Mr. Warren teaches.  For example the district seems to think that a good way to start a paper is with a “hook”.  Mr. Warren thinks the best way to start an essay in with an Inverted Triangle Intro.
