Sequence:  The order in which all of the events take place. 

 

Chronological Order:  Most stories are told in chronological order which is in “time order.” 

 

Flashback:  A scene that interrupts the story to introduce an event from the past.  The flashback should help build upon the plot.

 

Flash-forward:  A scene that jumps ahead in time to narrate an event that happens (or could happen) in the future.

 

Foreshadowing:  Hints or clues in the story that something will happen later in the plot.

7.  Assync Time:  Look over the Honors Book List.  Look for that titles that may interest you.  Then look on Amazon and look at page numbers, price, and read the summary of it to be sure that it is something that you want to invest time and your parents' money to read.

Day 9

 Objective:  The students will discuss the first four questions from assignment and then complete.

4.  Look at the first paragraph together for tone.

5.  Complete the assignment due today at end of Independent time.

Day 8

 Objective:  The students will complete The Pedestrian assignment for discussion tomorrow.

ESSAY NOTE:  You have until 3 pm on Friday to resubmit your essays for a better grade.  PLEASE do not delete the scores that I gave each paragraph.  I don't want to have to re-read a paragraph that has 20/20.  If you take off the score, I will have to read it again, and I might see something that I didn't the first time.  You don't want that!  :)

Chapter 1 Plot and Setting

Exposition:  The basic situation of the story.  It is the beginning of the story where the reader learns the character, conflict and setting.

Complications (Rising Action):  The events or problems that help develop the plot and build a reader’s interest.

Climax:  The most exciting part of the story.  It’s the turning point of the story usually toward the end.

Resolution:  The end of the story where the conflict is resolved.

Conflict:  The struggle between two forces.  It’s the problem that has to be solved in the story. 

      External:  Man v. man.  Man v. Nature.  Man v. Society, Man vs Tech

      Internal:  Within the main character’s mind or heart.

Setting:  The setting of a story affects the plot and the characters.  Setting includes the character’s customs- how they live, how they dress, eat and behave.  LOCAL COLOR

Setting will also reveal a time frame.

The most important function of setting is to contribute to the story’s emotional effect- its mood or atmosphere.  It helps set the tone.

How does an author create a specific tone?  With very specific words.  In other words, if an author wants the tone to be scary, he will use words (DICTION) that have SCARY Connotations.

 Objective:  The students will know expectations of a closing paragraph and how to properly set up a paper in MLA.

2.  What should you do in the Closing Paragraph?  The opposite of what you did in the inrto.  In other words, take my brain from your point and make it wide again.  Apply what you have proven to the bigger picture.  (About three sentences)

3.  Complete the essay and EDIT!!!  EDIT AGAIN.  Have a parent read it.  You need to catch esay errors and writing rules.

Last Assignment of the Year: LOTF Chapter 12

And just like that... we are on our last assignment.  I am proud of those of you who stuck with it all the way through.  If you have me in AP Lit your senior year, you will be better off than those who didn't read it because I mention it all of the time.

OK so before you finish the book, lets discuss Chapter 11.

Of course this chapter is most known for the death of Piggy.

With his death comes the destruction of two huge symbols:  the conch and Piggy's brain. 

If you look at the imagery of that scene, the author was definitely trying to make you see it.  The conch is shattered into 1000 pieces.  And Piggy's head literally smashed against the rocks below and opened up and pick stuff came out.  That would be his brain.

So now all three parts of a successful society are gone.  Nothing is left and only human's real nature is left:  Main is Basically Evil.

Ralph is alone.  Samneric have been taken captive. 

OK for Chapter 12.  No dialectic.  I am tired of those and I am sure that you are too.

So for the last chapter, just send me an email with a paragraph like the last part of the Book Report.  Just tell me what you thought of it.  The book as a whole.  And don't worry about writing rules.  Just be you, tell me your thoughts.

Digital Learning Assignment 11: LOTF Chapter 11

Hello all,

OK, Chapter 11 is kinda a transition chapter as I said.  Not a bunch to talk about for this one...  but just wait til Chapter 11...

1.  All the Biguns (the older boys) except for Samneric have joined Jack's tribe.  They have set up their camp at Castle Rock.

2.  Ralph talks about Simon's murder.  Although all the boys participated, they all also deny it.  Ralph, Piggy, Samneric.

3.  Ralph has trouble remembering his past life in civilization.  He has trouble really thinking about anything now.

4.  At night, Jack's tribe raids Ralph and his group.  They come for "fire" and end up taking Piggy's glasses.  Piggy is now totally useless, except for his brain...

5.  The comic relief that the author tried to instill in this chapter was the fight scene.  Ralph and Sam (I think it was Sam) thought that they were fighting the other boys.  But when they discuss the fight, you should realize that they were actually fighting each other.


OK, now to the book's climax.  Prepare yourselves!
