Simon is different from the other boys “not only due to his physical frailty, manifested in his fainting spells”, but also in his obvious concern for the more vulnerable boys. The littluns follow him, and he picks choice fruit for them from spots they can't reach. He stood up for Piggy and helps him get his glasses back when Jack knocks them off his head. In addition he has a secret place in the jungle, where he spends time alone.

The novel presents many obstacles that the boys must overcome. In the first chapter, the boys make there first rule; in order to speak, someone must have the conch shell. During the first meeting, which they call an ‘assembly’, one of the younger boys speaks of something that makes him afraid. He wanted to know about something frightening. Jack tells the others that if there is such a thing on the island he and his group will hunt and kill it.
Objective: The students will discuss LOTF Chapter 1.

William Golding was born September 19 1911 in Cornwell England. As a child, he attends Marlbourgh Grammar School, then he recieved his B.A. in English from Oxford. He later wrote, produced and acted in the London equivalent to “Very, very far-off Broadway theater”. He claimed that his literary ambitions began at the age of 7.
