“RMS Titanic” and Irony
Expository Essay

This essay will show your understanding of irony and your ability to explain how a specific event in history was ironic.  It will also show that you know how to find important information in a literary piece and incorporate it into your essay by paraphrasing and quoting information.
You will have to use four different kinds of quotes in this essay to pass:
·         Integrated quote
·         Integrated quote with word change
·         Example quote
·         Quote that uses an Ellipsis properly
Writing Situation:  Many authors of literature use irony in their fictional works.  Writers of non-fiction however are limited in their writing to events that actually took place.  They cannot (or are not supposed to) make things up.  It just so happens that many real-life, true situations are full of ironic events.  This is such the case with the RMS Titanic disaster.

Writing Directions:  In a clear and thoughtful essay discuss how the RMS Titanic is one of the most ironic events in modern history.  Using information from Harrison W. Baldwin’s non-fiction account called “RMS Titanic,” provide at least three developed examples of irony presented in piece.  You will want to develop each example using specific information from the article.  You will need to use a minimum of four quotes (see above) in your essay to support your ideas.
