WP: Baptism in Literature
In his book titled
How to Read Like a Professor in the chapter called If She Comes Up, It’s
Baptism, Thomas C. Foster suggests that when a character goes into the
water, it is probably a symbol or metaphor for baptism. He says that when a character gets wet, it will often mean some sort of
“death and rebirth through the medium of water”. This is true in Frankenstein The Adventures of Huck Finn and
The Catcher in the Rye.
