WP Activity; “Two Kinds”
“Two Kinds,” is a short story from a novel called The Joy Luck Club. The book consists of a lot of short anecdotes (little stories that illustrate a specific moment from the passed). In this anecdote the narrator tells of a time that her mother wanted her to be a prodigy at something. Jing-mei fights against her mothers wishes and the end result causes more conflict between them.
Objective: The students will discuss Caderousse's Story and know what caused Old Dantes" death.

CST Activity: “Two Kinds”
In the story “Two Kinds” a conflict arises in a chinese American family when a strong-willed mother is bent on seeing her daughter become a prodigy. She simply wants to be herself. As the mother pushes the child the young girl becomes de-moralized and angry after several failures. This is an example of an External, Man Versus Man conflict.
Objective: The students will know one of the big symbols/metaphors in Monte Cristo.
1. Turn in vocabulary if you didn't yesterday.
2. Baptism Symbol/Metaphor handout and group activity.
3. MC 11-20 Due tomorrow. Take the day off of reading if you have read up to 20. If you haven't read to there, do it.
4. Pass back all work in corrected folder. If there are papers left of yours, I will deduct 5 points per assignment in there.

WP: Baptism in Literature
In his book titled How to Read Like a Professor in the chapter called If She Comes Up, It’s Baptism, Thomas C. Foster suggests that when a character goes into the water, it is probably a symbol or metaphor for baptism. He says that when a character gets wet, it will often mean some sort of “death and rebirth through the medium of water”. This is true in Frankenstein The Adventures of Huck Finn and The Catcher in the Rye.
